I’m going to preface this with saying this is not the lore OF Lapu Lapu, it’s the lore behind the sticker that ended up on my shop<\/em><\/strong>. Though if you want to know the lore of Lapu Lapu, you should look it up. As a former Oceanology major hearing the western version<\/em> of the story was.. eye opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where I was taught that Lapu Lapu defended his island, my text books were telling me the opposite. Gotta love American logic and history, I guess<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story of Lapu Lapu was one my Lolo would tell me at dinner time. Mostly because I would ask at dinner time, the way a child asks the same question 348379247 times at the exact same time every single day as if they did not just hear the answer that many times prior. Hard to get annoyed when my kids do it since I remember doing it myself vividly. Thankfully, my Lolo never once got annoyed at my hundreds of questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He often wore a faded white tee with an image of the fight of Lapu Lapu on the beach, slayed humans behind him, as he stood tall and proud. I would ask who he was, why was he on a beach, why are those people dead and why are they on your shirt. He’d then launch into the story of Lapu Lapu, who he was, why he was important, how he fought for the freedom of their island. That was just the short version for my little 5 year old brain. But it’s a story that has stuck with me my whole life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I didn’t know back then was anything about my Lolo’s family. Turns out his brother painted the same scene and his work is displayed in a museum as well as was printed in National Geographic, which one? I’m not entirely sure since my mom gives me half thought out answers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My Lolo passed after my first trip to the Philippines, I’m sure he could tell something was already wrong. I remember sitting on his lap saying I didn’t want to leave without him and he assured me he’d be home soon, he’ll be right behind me. He passed not too long after, I still vividly remember our last conversation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next trip to the Philippines we went to visit his grave (it was epic, I wish I had pics I could show), I got to see the island that Lapu Lapu fought on, the monument that stands there now. And ironically, that trip I was attacked by a colony of fire ants while playing water balloons with my cousins and brother — that might have to be a post for a different day because it was… horrible. But because of the venom from literally a colony I became very sick and spent 2 weeks bed bound since I was feverish, delirious and I swear my Lolo (who had died at that house) was sitting there taking care of me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s crazy that what can seem like just answering a child’s 543857th same question can turn into their own lore, their own memories that can stay with them for the rest of their lives. If there’s anything I learned from my Lolo (which is a lot, actually), it’s that the most simple things that are met with compassion and empathy that children remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hope this sticker brings you as much joy as creating it has brought me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
